In the frame of ECTP-CEU’s investigation of the future of modernistic mass housing neighbourhoods, .ism-s was selected to make a strategic policy plan for the neighbourhood of Kypseli in Athens. The plan aims to revitalise the neighbourhood by introducing a coherent vision for a liveable and lively Kypseli. The vision is translated into clear interventions aiming to improve on existing qualities of the area and facilitate the transition towards a 15’ Kypseli where living, working, and meeting go together.
For the 15’ Kypseli, proximity is the key, with destinations being in 15’ reach, by bike or on foot, from one’s home. The already high density and the diversity, both in terms of people and in terms of land uses, allow and support the existence of local business, and cultural and educational institutions. The proximity of those destinations will be ameliorated with the creation of an attractive and safe network of soft and slow mobility that will encourage people to walk and cycle. The second pillar on which 15’ Kypseli is based upon, is the creation of liveable public spaces, in the immediate vicinity of one’s home, that will fit with the new identity of the neighbourhood and will be easily recognisable and inviting.
The shift will take place by virtue of various strategic projects and a concrete framework that promotes close cooperation between the authorities, private actors, and residents through means of placemaking. In this fashion all kinds of partners will be shaping together the future of their neighbourhood.
